On January 8, 2007 the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services revised the Conditions of Participation under 42 CFR Part 482 of the Federal Register. The revision was a final rule related to verbal orders, medication storage, history and physical examination and anesthesia practices. CMS discusses these changes as a means of driving patient focused, outcome oriented care, reducing unnecessary burdens on hospitals, and providing greater flexibility to meet patient needs. This document is a discussion of each issue, what the change means to the hospital and how the changes correspond to any Joint Commission standards concerning the topic.
